When it comes to living legends in the field of numismatics, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone more notable than John Mercanti, the U.S. Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver and the creator of more than 100 coin and medal designs. Now retired, Mercanti achieved everlasting fame as the artist behind the American Silver Eagle design, which was struck from 1986 to 2021. Today, the American Silver Eagle is the world’s most widely traded and collected modern silver coin. It’s also the most popular modern U.S. precious metal coin, having been struck at least 600 million times! Though retired, Mercanti still keeps busy, and now he’s lent his talents to Great Britain’s world-renowned Royal Mint for a new program that shows the national symbols of both America and Great Britain—the Lion of England and Bald Eagle of the United States!

Design Symbolizes Combined Strength Of Great Britain & America

In this first-ever collaboration between the Royal Mint and a former U.S. Mint Engraver, the Mercanti Lion & Eagle coin shows the Lion of England sitting alongside the American Bald Eagle. In the profile, they are both depicted facing right, symbolizing the combined strength of the two nations now coexisting along and supporting one another. The legend “THE LION AND THE EAGLE” is inscribed above the design and is surrounded by a pair of laurel leaves. The 2023 year-date and Mercanti’s initials—JM—are located just above the Lion’s paw that extends towards the coin’s edge.
