About Effie Calavaza - (1927 - 2019)

Effie Calavaza was from Zuni, New Mexico and is among the most widely recognized Zuni artists. The unmistakably unique "snake" patterned jewelry is among the most coveted jewelry pieces among collectors. Beloved Native American artist Effie went all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States of America to obtain full copyright of her artwork to stop the importing of fake pieces of her work. She specialized in sand casting and incorporated large stones with her snake designs. She began silversmithing in 1956 after learning from her husband, Juan Calavaza, until his death around 1970. Upon her husbands death Effie signed her work EFFIE C. ZUNI. Her daughters, Georgiana Yatsattie, Gloria Jean Garcia, and Susie Calavaza, are all jewelers as well. New pieces using her patterns are made by her son, Randy Calavaza and his wife, Amelia (Joy) Calavaza and by her grandson Gilbert Calavaza.

**We have been acquiring our pieces directly from the artists and Native American shops for decades to ensure authenticity. Buy with confidence!
