Rhipsalis burchellii

This wonderful cactus is quite interesting, with its long branches of fine, spaghetti-like stems and foliage, cascading elegantly to 6' and longer. In early to mid spring, small creamy-white, 1/2" flowers appear; followed by pea-sized white or pink fruits. I received my original young plant from the ISI (International Succulent Institute) at the Huntington Botanical Gardens back in the mid 1990s, and it has remained one of my favorite plants to this day. Quite rare in cultivation.

This Brazilian native naturally grows in trees, with good air movement and bright filtered light. The leaves of this delicate species can scorch pretty easily if given direct sun, though, direct morning sun should be ok. From spring through fall, during active growth, allow the plant to dry out about 2/3 of the way, before watering again. For best growth and flowering, I recommend feeding regularly with a light solution of balanced fertilizer. With good culture, this beauty can become quite a large specimen. Though not frost hardy, my plants have been growing in an unheated greenhouse in USDA Zone 9B, and have gone into the mid 30s a few times each winter. Daytime temperatures should be on the cooler side; preferring not to go much over 85 degrees F. for any length of time. This rare and lovely species is actually quite easy to grow, as long as it's in an area where the air is moist and buoyant, not hot and dry.

This offering is for two 6-8" stem cuttings - freshly cut and dipped in rooting hormone. The cuttings you will receive are healthy and true to name (and may show a few nicks and dings).

I've been growing and collecting Epiphyllums and other jungle cacti for over 45 years, and enjoy over 700 varieties in my collection. It would be hard to choose a favorite, but it would probably have to be the one that's right in front of me!

All photos are of plants in my own collection - unless stated otherwise. Flower photos are for reference only. Not in bloom.
