THE ARTIST: Forrest Proper is a bookseller, poet, writer, and artist who lives in a creaky Victorian house a few farm fields away from the Connecticut River in the Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, where he often may be found pottering in his gardens and devising ways to outwit the woodchucks.
