On October 11, 1984, the U.S. Postal Service issued these Eleanor Roosevelt 20¢ gummed stamps in Hyde Park, NY. The design was based on a photograph by her physician, Dr. A. David Gurewitsch.

Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) was one of the most influential people of the twentieth century, not only during her years as the country's 'first lady' (when her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt, was president), but also before and after.

During World War I, she worked for several organizations that provided assistance to service personnel; and after the war, she was active in the League of Women Voters and served as a translator for the International Congress of Working Women. While in the White House, she held press conferences and wrote a newspaper column, helped develop several New Deal programs, promoted improved race relations, and visited overseas troops in World War II. After the war, she served the country for many years in the United Nations, chairing the UN Human Rights Commission and playing a key role in writing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy appointed her to head the Commission on the Status of Women.
