The 12th Series Garbage Pail Kids set was due by the Topps art department on January 15th for a March 1988 release. The two production runs of the 12th Series—aka Original Series 12 GPK, or OS12 for short—are exactly the same except for their wrapper variations.  The first production run wrapper has the '25¢ CHEAP' logo and the second production run wrapper is without this logo. This is the second set to inlude the 'FLICK-IT!' section on the reverse card backs of various cards completed by artist Richard Mcguire. With the GPK brand in its final year, from 1987-1988, and the popularity slowing down, the product is harder to find, raising the price per pack at certain retailers, and increasing the demand for these cards by collectors years later.

The New Product Development team continued to have artist James Bennett work on the card fronts, after his OS11 introduction, alongside full-time freelance artists John Pound, Tom Bunk and James Warhola for the set; this would be the last set that Bennett would contribute to.
