Puzzle jugs were a joke for people at pubs, bars and places where people gathered to drink “adult” beverages.  As a person would use the stein or mug, the liquid would pour out of the holes on the side. There is a hole inside the stein at the base that allows the fluids to come up through the handle to the rim where there are holes to drink through.
