John Deere, Model R

USA, 1954

One of the flrst John Deere-designed tractors, the Model D was introduced in 1923. In 1949 that venerable tractor was updated with the Model R, the company's first diesel tractor and their largest up to that time.

When put through the Nebraska tests, the R proved to be one of the most fuel-efficient tractors available. Professional styling from the industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss gave it a touch of class.

The two-cylinder, horizontal diesel engine was started using a smaller, two-cylinder, petrol 'pup' motor. It had a five-speed transmission, live power take-off and John Deere's "Powr Trol" hydraulic lift system. It came in John Deere Green with the company's own blend of yellow on the wheels.

The Model R was the first 'big' tractor for many farmers and excellent for all kinds of drawbar work or to run a good-sized thresher. With its distinctive two-cylinder beat, the big B is now a prized attraction at shows and is hard to beat at the vintage tractor pulls.

The Model R was manufactured at the company's works in Waterloo, Iowa from 1940 to 1954, with just over 21,000 units built. It was especially popular in North America and Australia but also sold in Britain, mainland Europe and New Zealand.
