Adlertag

by Charles J Thompson

Adlertag - Eagle Day, 13th August 1940 - was to have been the official opening of Adlerangriff - Eagle Attack - on the British Isles, but it got off to a very inauspicious start for the Luftwaffe.

Bad weather forced Goering to call off the attack, but Dornier Do 17Z's of KG2, from Cambrai, led by Oberst Johannes Fink, failed to receive the cancellation order and crossed the Channel without fighter cover.

After bombing Sheerness and Eastchurch soon after 7 am., he was engaged by Hawker Hurricanes of No 111 Squadron, led by Squadron Leader John Thompson up from Croydon (the satellite station to Kenley) and tried to dive for cloud cover. Several Dorniers were lost.
