WW1 German trench art from 1917 Verdun

Approx 2 15/16" across

This metal plate with an Iron Cross, 1917 and Verdun. Judging by the rings visible the metal appears to be the bottom part of an artillery shell.

Warped, covered in patina and oxidation

Battle of Verdun, (February 21–December 18, 1916), World War I engagement in which the French repulsed a major German offensive. It was one of the longest, bloodiest, and most-ferocious battles of the war; French casualties amounted to about 400,000, German ones to about 350,000. Some 300,000 were killed. The sector remained relatively quiet for the period January–August 1917. Then on 20 August 1917, French forces launched a major offensive, applying eight divisions and recapturing almost all of the features that remained in German hands
