In 1918-1921, the main machine gun of the Georgian Armed Forces was the English Lewis automatic machine gun. The author of the design idea was US Army Colonel Isaac Lewis, who in 1911 designed a light machine gun with an original air-cooling system, but could not convince management of the prospects of its use. After leaving the service, in 1913 he went to Belgium and founded the company Armes Automatique Lewis. That same year, the Belgian army purchased a small batch of machine guns. At the same time, the British company Birmingham Small Arms Company became interested in production, which in 1914 bought a license to manufacture the Model 1914 and moved the plant to England to protect production from a possible German invasion. The official name of the machine gun: Gun, Lewis, .303-cal. was. During World War I, the American Savage Arms Company also began producing machine guns.
