Brynmawr Workshop 1930s Art Deco Oak Desk with 3 Drawers

Super oak desk from the workshops of the Brynmawr Furniture Company in South Wales C1930. Paul Matt, the son of a cabinet maker who had been apprenticed to his father for three years came to Brynmawr as leader of the local unemployed persons clubs, was the instigator for the company. A trained designer and a man of vision and energy, he saw an opportunity of combining one of his ideas with the creation of new products. The company ceased trading in 1940.

You have got to admire the simple “Deco” lines on this one, those black handles, the simple design, the black base as well as the wrap-around design on the drawers. Many like this were commissioned by Aberdare Hall, a ladies only college, part of Cardiff University.

Workshop report – The desk sits firm with no wobbles. We have day to day historic wear to the oak with wear to the black drawer handles as well. The top does have day to day wear and one or two historic splits but is very usable. We have a little veneer repair to one old side, not new and not offensive. Expect a 1930s desk which shows genuine use, not a new one.

A seldom seen oak desk from the Brynmawr workshop.
