Here is a late 19th Century Lion Of Lucerne, Swiss Black Forest Carving Box perfect for stamps and paper clips, or as a small desk tidy. It has the date 1792 etched in to the wood in Roman numerals below the lion. This carving is modeled after the stone sculpture designed by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorwaldsen and executed by Lukas Ahorn in 1821 in Lucerne. The sculpture commemorates the Swiss Guard in Paris who fell in 1792 protecting the French Royal Family. “Helvetiorum Fidei Ac Virtuti” translates to mean, “To the Loyalty and Bravery of the Swiss.” Which is inscribed on the monument that is just outside Lucerne.
