This year's entry in the incredibly popular Deadly & Dangerous program is the beautiful but lethal Portuguese Man-of-War, known Down Under as the Bluebottle. Don't miss out, get this one troy ounce frosted cameo gold proof today!

The annual Deadly and Dangerous release is a high point of the numismatic calendar, eagerly anticipated by collectors around the globe. This year's entry, the Portuguese Man O'War, certainly does not disappoint! The coin is graced with spectacular beauty, vivid colors, and a unique (to say nothing of deadly) creature. If you're in the water and you spot a Portuguese Man O' War, head the other way. This beautiful bad boy of the open ocean has long, poisonous tentacles. Typically, it uses these to "fish"—to sting and kill fish (which it easily does) and then reel them in. But its venom is so powerful it can kill people, too. When its tentacles come into contact with prey (or human skin), they trigger stinging cells, called nematocysts. These are like hundreds of miniature harpoons, piercing their prey and injecting venom!

Its unusual name, Man O'War, is hundreds of years old. Sailors named it for Portuguese caravel warships, which it resembles under full sail. Down Under, Aussies call it the Pacific Man O'War or "Bluebottle" (because it literally looks like a blue bottle), though it is the same single species as in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

The Portuguese Man-Of-War is a truly unique and bizarre organism, certainly one of the most unusual looking on the planet. Despite its similarity to a jellyfish, it isn't a jellyfish at all, though it's sort of a distant cousin. It's the only species in its genus, Physalia, which in turn is the only genus in the family Physaliidae. Put another way, even though it looks like it might be a jellyfish, it has no close relatives; there's nothing else on earth close to it. Unbelievably, it isn't really even a single creature. Rather, it's a colony of thousands of genetically identical individuals, called zooids, that live together cooperatively and function as a single animal.

The vivid hues of both the Bluebottle, in all its amazing detail, as well as the sunset, have been accurately captured on this one troy ounce pure gold proof through state of the art digital minting coloration. Each coin is displayed inside an elegant, luxury presentation case protected by a black and gold outer box. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is included. With a mintage limit of just 150, we recommend quick action!
