folks think they are not real leather so I am showing pictures of one of
my buttons after a bout with a hammer to dispel such notions! see above last picture
The size of the buttonhole for most buttons is
determined by measuring the diameter of the
button, plus the button thickness, (DOME HEIGHT)
To determine
buttonhole size for a dome button, place a
measuring tape across the dome from edge to edge and allow an extra 1/4”.
if you are replacing a flat button you must measure the button HOLE as the dome of these buttons requires more room! keyhole buttonholes (with a round end on one side) allow for extra room up to 1/4"
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A TAPE MEASURE USE STRING OR A PIECE OF PAPER THEN LAY NEXT TO A RULER
To save wear and tear on buttonholes, they need
to be large enough for buttons to slip
through, but small enough to prevent
unbuttoning during wear, stiff fabric and/or leather need more room for buttoning than soft knits, sweaters, etc.
