[Poster]: Fietsen Voor Viet Nam [Bicycles for Viet Nam]

Title: [Poster]: Fietsen Voor Viet Nam [Bicycles for Viet Nam]
Publication: (Nijmegen), [Netherlands]: "Vrije Universiteit" van de Bretde Viet Nam Beweging Nijmegen / Medisch Comité Nederland-Viet Nam, [early 1970s]

Description: Unbound. Poster. Measuring 16" x 24". Halftone printed in several colors, featuring reproductions of black and white photographs. Very light curling from once being rolled, light wear, pinholes at the corners and two in the image, near fine. A striking Dutch poster raising funds to build bicycles and equip some of them with medical supplies to help with the "Viet Namese freedom struggle." The project is a collaboration between the "Free University" of the Broad Viet Nam Movement, Nijmegen and The Netherlands-Viet Nam Medical Committee. The poster calls the bicycle "the secret weapon of the Vietnamese people" and claims that just twelve bicycles can match the transport capacity of a three-ton truck. The text mostly describes the medical and transport uses of bicycles in war, we can't help but note the Kalashnikov slung over the shoulder of the woman sanguinely riding her bike through a bombed area. Other illustrations include the flags of the Netherlands, Laos, Cambodia, North Vietnam and the Viet Cong, as well as black and white photographs showing bicycles in action. The text is set against a Delftware pattern. According to the *OCLC* entry for the papers of the Medisch Comité Nederland-Viet Nam, held in The Netherlands, the group was founded in 1968 and collaborations like this began in the early 1970s. A fascinating and visually engaging poster, showing the war from the perspective of a noncombatant, European country. Very uncommon.
