Soylent Green is a 1973 American dystopian thriller film directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Charlton Heston, Chuck Connors, Joseph Cotten, Whit Bissell, Leigh Taylor-Young, and Edward G. Robinson in his final film. Loosely based on the 1966 science fiction novel Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison. In 1973 it won the Nebula Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film.

Set in the far-future world of 2022, the Earth is dying and people are rioting at the short supply of Soylent foodstuffs, including the popular Soylent Green. When a Soylent Corporation executive is murdered, the policeman investigating the case makes a brutal discovery: Soylent Green is not make from plankton, but from human beings, including the euthanized (and quite possibly people rioting for more food). In other words – Soylent Green is People!

It’s hard to forget the poster for this film, with Charlton Heston fleeing a Riot Control bulldozer that is scooping up people!

In a case of life imitating art, there is now a brand of meal replacement products called Soylent, introduced in 2014 after a crowdfunding campaign that generated nearly $1.5 million in preorders. It is, however, not made from people.

Not to be confused with the Louisiana extreme sludge metal / grindcore band, Soilent Green.
