The Heritage Trolleys of Memphis

This video program shows the operations of the Memphis Area Transit Authority Main Street Trolley and the Riverfront Loop. The Main Street Trolley began operation in 1993 through downtown Memphis and features double-track running in the street and along a downtown pedestrian mall.

The Riverfront Loop opened in 1997 follows the Main Street Trolley line northbound and runs southbound past the Mississippi River sharing part of the right of way with a former Illinois Central Kallroad line now used by Amtrak. The cars primarily used for these services are single-truck closed cars from Oporto, Portugal and double-truck closed cars from Melbourne, Australia. The operation was photographed in August 2002 while the cars were still using trolley poles.
