Minton & Co C1845 Encaustic Tiles Neo-Medieval Old English Tile Design

The tiles have solid red bodies, inlaid with white and glazed with yellow (now worn in places).

They are made after medieval Temple Church and Westminster Abbey Chapter House examples.

There isn't a maker's mark on the reverse, but random holes are punched.

These tiles were possibly removed from the Temple Church after bomb damage during World War II.

Text from the British Museum's website, "Minton & Co.'s first major commission was for the restoration of the Temple Church in 1840-42, under L. Cottingham.

Some of the designs of the tiles produced by Minton are copies of medieval tiles from Westminster Abbey Chapter House, which had recently been rediscovered.

Others were copied from the medieval tiles in the Temple Church itself, and some were new designs, i.e. the symbols of the Inner and Middle Temples.

The earliest Minton tiles are two-colour inlaid characterised by random stab marks (a device which aids drying) and the yellow glaze covering the inlaid white or buff areas."

Mintons made these designs to renovate the Temple Church in 1840-42.

 Dimensions: 6 1/4" x 6 1/4" x 1" (158 mm x 158 mm x 24 mm). Weight a total of 2752 grams before packing.

So that you know, the tiles have been cleaned of the remaining adhesive.

We have more tiles available, including King Edward the Confessor giving a ring to a pilgrim.

I will answer any questions at Antique Endeavors and gladly fix a genuine issue.

I do my best to disclose any flaws I find in an item.

That does not mean that I may see or overlook a mark.

I provide high-definition pictures for buyers to look over items themselves.

I am entirely willing to send more pictures upon request and answer any of your questions to the best of my ability and knowledge.

Everything Antique Endeavors sell is aged.

To have no flaws, imperfections or signs of age, such as wear or tiny flea bites on a vintage or antique item, is nearly impossible.

If you want something perfect, purchase something brand new and in its box.

All items will be gently handled and carefully packed, and some things are double-boxed for shipment and shipped with care via Royal Mail for parcels up to 2 kg.

We will send the most oversized items via Parcelforce.

For the International, we use tracked shipping through Royal Mail, and the largest parcels will have sent through eBay Global Shipping Program.

Since the quality and condition of aged, vintage and antique merchandise are subjective, all items are sold “AS IS”, and sales are final. Unless otherwise noted, most of the things I sell are found at high-end London area estate sales, so I cannot vouch for their provenance or history. Where I can, the origin of the items will be stated.

I research and price each item to the best of my ability and have some pieces appraised, but I need to improve in grading antique or vintage items.

Please research before purchasing and look over high-definition pictures thoroughly.

If there are chips or cracks that I’ve been able to find in an item, I will point them out in pictures. Pictures ARE the most important part of the description.

Please check Antique Endeavors listings for other great finds; I will combine shipping where possible.

I am an environmentally friendly citizen; I will reuse some boxes, bubble wrap and paper when possible.

If you purchase from me, you can rest assured that your money is being invested back into your fellow citizens, not big corporations.

I put a significant amount of time into researching and pricing items accordingly and to the best of my ability, but I do not claim to be an expert on anything I have listed.

Again, please research before purchasing an item you are still determining. I will provide more pictures when you ask and answer any of your questions to the best of my ability.

Please leave positive feedback if you are happy with your purchase and communication with me.

It helps to grow my business. I leave feedback for everyone.
