Lunch Pail Parts brings you rare, obsolete Genuine Ford goodies, but this one takes the cake!
This pen stand was a souvenir for certain people involved with Mercury's T-7 program, the Mustang-derived model that eventually became known as 'Cougar'. As you read on, take a close look at the high-res photos.
It was made by Woodstock Die Casting ('WDC'). Famous for high-precision cast metal parts under the 'Prestolite' brand, WDC was a remnant of a larger firm — the Electric Autolite™ Co. — largely absorbed by Ford in 1961.
The 'Prestolite' trademark appears on 'Deluxe line' trim for many 1965 - 1968 Ford and Mercury cars, including 1965 - 1967 Mustang GT fog lamp bars and fender badges. As you might guess, WDC also made the headlight cover plaques found on Mercury's new-for-'67 Cougar.
I'm told WDC was asked to design a gift for Mercury big shots, commemorating the Cougar press intro. Ingeniously, they used the headlamp plaque as decoration modifying it to fit Parker's model 21 'Spherix' fountain pen...a pricey, top-drawer executive instrument, at the time.
So, WDC altered the casting with drilled & threaded posts, sitting in a custom milled walnut base with a large Alnico magnet. Thus, the Spherix's ball-shaped receiver is held in place via magnetism, nesting perfectly within a small, concave spot at top-right on the plaque.
You're looking at the real deal, a small piece of Genuine Ford history and a guaranteed conversation piece. Best of all, there's no reserve so don't miss out ! |
