Title: Antique Standing Buddha in Bronze, Laotian Art. Khmer, Mon Influence. 17th/18th C. Laos
Temple Figure. Nong Khai Province. Museum Quality!

Overview: An inspiring 17th to 18th century Lao Buddhist sculpture of Bronze-Tin composition, recovered from a temple precinct in the Nong Khai province of northeastern Thailand. A territory primarily occupied by descendants of Laotian origin, who migrated from the Mekong region into northeastern Thailand beginning in about the 15th century. The earliest indigenous Buddha images dating from 1353-1500's show strong Khmer and Mon Dvaravati influence, after which a distinctive Lao style had begun to develop and statues displayed a more individualized characteristic, such as beak-like noses, extended earlobes, as well as standing images modeled with stiffly positioned arms extended to both sides of the Buddha's body with long hands and fingers. All of which are strickly Lao treatments as displayed here - in this example.

Note: In Laos, the bronze, which is called 'Samrit' includes precious metals and often has a relatively high percentage of 'Tin', which gives the casted image a lustrous dark gray color, and over time the patina process blackens.

Description: A spiritual image of Buddha portrayed in an exalted profile, dressed in royal attire, standing in a strong frontal pose of samabhanga, with feet firmly planted on a small plinth. Buddha stands with both hands held stiffly in the Vitarka mudra, the gesture of intellectual argument or discussion, with fingers joined to form a circle.
XXX Buddha wears a long monastic robe shown with a rolled hem at the bottom of the garment, secured at the waist and is draped by a central panel, finely incised, and extending down to the bottom hem.
XXX The face is serene with downcast expression, slanted eyes, high ridged eyebrows, aquiline beak-like nose, wide mouth, and elongated earlobes. The head is cover by large hair curls, indicated by cross-hatch incisions, surmounted by a tall 'Ushnisha', decorated with sacred life florals and topped by a bulbous ornament finial.
XXX Solid cast in the lost wax method, the bronze alloy of this type - generally consisted of 85% copper, 10-15% tin composition, giving the surface a lustrous dark gray hue. Other metals such as maganese, nickel, or zinc, and sometimes non metals such as arsenic and phosphorus are generally included on temple statuary of this type. The surface shows some areas of green malachite developing, and some exposed areas of copper highlights from being rubbed. A teakwood pedestal was later added, with modification to adapt with the sculpture.
