In this live recording from 1991 Garmich-Partenkirchen Richard Strauss Festival, Erich Leinsdorf conducts the Berlin Statskapelle in Don Juan op. 20, Ein Heldenleben op. 40 and Holerlin Hymnen Op. 71, with soloist Sabine Hass. Leinsdorf was a renowned Strauss specialist who died in 1993. The Berlin Staatskapelle is one of the oldest orchestras in the world, and has held performances for over 400 years. Richard Strauss himself led this orchestra from 1898 as Principal Court Conductor and in 1908 was appointed General Director.
