Bertie was born and resided in Norfolk. He was married to Beatrice Annie Wurr in 1910 she passed away in 1913. He joined the military He entered France on the 5th December 1917. According to his Medal Index Card he served with the Norfolk Regiment and South Lancashire Regiment while he was with the latter he was attached to the Loyal North Lancs which is when he likely wounded due to a lack of officers. He's then likely to have died of wounds at a hospital in Etaples on the 13th June 1918.
