French Revolution "Republique Francaise” Officer’s Coat Button

Description: Nice example of a Pre-Napoleonic French 1st Republic officer’s uniform button. This style of button was used by every military branch of service. These were adopted during the French First Republic and were still in use up through the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte during the First Empire.

The button features a fasces in the center with a Phrygian cap on top flanked by branches of laurel and oak. The emblem is surrounded by the words "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE” with a rope border edge. This is an officer’s repousse button meaning the detail was stamped from the reverse side. This is a nice example with plenty of rose gilt and a spun wood back insert. There is a small surface oxidation spot on top edge of the face. Portions of the string or cord are still attached to the back.
