Although African turquoise is called turquoise, it is actually not turquoise at all. The stone is mined in Africa and is often treated to give it its rich blue-green color. Since the stone is a form of jasper and jasper is a form of chalcedony, African turquoise is technically a form of chalcedony, just like agate and so many other stones. African jasper quartz which gives it an opaque appearance unlike the transparent agate. It also has other inclusions, such as copper and iron, which add to the beautiful mottled color palette.
