The Twilight Zone is possibly one of the best science fiction / fantasy / horror anthology series ever shown on television. Some people, such as myself, say it was one of the best TV series of any genre. The Twilight Zone, which ran for 5 Seasons (1959-1964). was the product of the late, great Rod Serling, It was well known that Mr. Serling had become sick of the censorship he felt from network executives. He felt that by placing the show in the realm of fantasy and science fiction, he would be allowed to address issues of the day without any network interference. Thankfully, the audience was brighter than the executives or maybe the executives knew, but simply played along so the show would be made. Either way, the result was a new, wonderful, entertaining story every week.
One of my favorite episodes was "The Invaders". It aired on January 27, 1961, as Episode 15 of Season 2. It's about an unnamed woman (played by Agnes Moorehead) who lives alone in a rural area. She finds herself the victim of some space invaders that land on her roof in a UFO. Although the two tiny men in space suits terrorize her, she is able to defeat the small invaders. The squat, pudgy invaders look like wind-up toys but they are effective at being a threat, shooting her with a weapon that leaves little welts on her skin. She spends the entire episode in terror, trying to protect herself and her home.
This auction is for a Sideshow Toys 12" Twilight Zone rendition of these little green Invaders. This action figure was designed at the same size (1:1 scale) as the one used in filming this episode of The Twilight Zone. I would describe this figure as being more a prop replica than a toy. The figure is roto-cast vinyl and has some articulation built into twisting joints (shoulders and antenna can move). Mat Falls was the sculptor for the Invader, and his work can be seen in plenty of other Sideshow figures. Like all Sideshow Toy figures, this one is limited to ensure collectibility.
