NOTES: First Gronovius edition of this important Greek lexicograpical text. Harpocration of Alexandria was lexicographer of uncertain date - some have placed him under Tiberius, others maintain that he wrote not long after Atheneus, the latest author quoted by him (ca. 200 CE). Harpocration's Lexicon of the Ten Orators consists of words, proper names, and phrases from the Orators, in alphabetic order, with explanations.  Harpocration quotes nearly every important Greek writer, from Homer downwards. Besides stylistic details he includes valuable notes on architectural, religious, legal constitutional, and commercial expressions and terms. The Greek text was first printed in Venice, 1503 ; this is the first edition prepared and annotated by the eminent Dutch scholar; Jacob Gronovius (1645-1716), the son and pupil of the great Johann Friedrich Grovonius. In the appendix (p. 142-168, last pagination series), Gronovius has added the important Diatribe on the text of Isocrates by the French Renaissance scholar-printer, Henri Estienne (1531-1598), who was himself a famous lexicographer, author of the still useful Thesaurus Graecae Linguae. Brunet III 47, Hoffmann II 195.  [Some notes derived from earlier unnamed bookseller research. laid in - AF]
