This painting dates from circa the mid to late 19th century in England and is a copy of Thomas Gainsborough's painting titled 'The Cottage Door'. The third photo and darker close-ups are taken in a dark room and the others are taken outside in natural light.
Size incl. frame: 334 x 376 x 17 mm (approx.)
Size excl. frame: 250 x 290 mm (approx.)
Condition:
The frame is near contemporary with the composition, probably a bit later. The verso of the panel is painted blue and secured with tape around the edges as typical which is slightly lifting in places. The string on the verso holds the painting securely and the mounts for this are securely attached. The frame is a little discoloured around all edges but shows nicely. Some light craquelure visible only under direct light. Some small areas and details in impasto. Very attractive composition.
