2 euro coin honoring the 150th birthday of the mathematician and astronomer, Josip Plemelj.

Josip Plemelj (1873-1967) was a Slovene mathematician, whose main contributions were to the theory of analytic functions and the application of integral equations to potential theory. He was the first chancellor of the University of Ljubljana.

The obverse design features part of an equation, with numbers and symbols that rotate in circles and illustrate the rotation of the planets, movement in space and at the same time the merging of individual insoluble elements into a whole. In this way, the coin illustrates Josip Plemelj's two areas of work and research: mathematics and astronomy.

The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European flag.
