Magnus Maximus Designs - was a company created by 3 talented designer and silversmiths who worked together in the 1970s and on into the early 1980s. They were Michael Gray Bell,Pauline Diane Bell and Ian Murray Pennell. They worked together in shared workshops in Frizington in Cumbria in the north of England, creating modernist style creative jewellery at the height of the 1970s. Some of their pieces featured the natural geodes - rocks in their raw form, complemented by simple mounts to emphasise the beauty of the stones. It is no coincidence that they were based in Frizington which is in the Western Cumbria mining area, mined for centuries and known for its spectacular minerals found in the limestone, granite and slate of the area. The limestone area being dominated by large deposits of high grade hematite iron ore. Faults in the limestone were filled with heamatite giving venin-type deposits, cavities could be found lined with kidney-ore and crystals of specularite, calcite, barite, quartz etc with high grade haematite iron ore. Some of the pieces had exquisite crystal structures. These pieces would have sparked the creativity in these designers, who went on to use many other beautiful stones to inspire their wonderful creations.  They had their designs assayed in Birmingham, Newcastle and in Edinburgh. Their pieces are becoming increasingly highly collectible as the company was dissolved by the early1980s and their pieces reflect the exciting heady designs of the period which is now recognised as so desirable.
