Title: Khmer Bronze Statue of a Multi-arm Female Hindu Goddess. Cambodia 19/20th C.

Description: A superb 19th to 20th century Khmer Bronze statue of a young multi-armed Hindu Goddess, probably that of 'Parvati', beautifully portrayed as she stands on a Lotus throne in the Tribhanga (triple flexion) posture, performing the Vitarka mudra, a teaching gesture, with the lower right hand, while simultaneously holding a ring. Her upper left hand is in similar gesture, while the other two arms are extended holding attributes in each hand.
XXX The goddess stands poise as a naked figure of sensuous attitude, merely adorned in strands of jewels, wearing an intertwined 'diadem' headdress, with her hair arranged in finely braided strands secured by a stylized band, encircled by a floral and jeweled trilobed tiara, and lotus blossom ring at the back which supports her pony-tail finial. Her exquisitely rendered face bears a benevolent expression, with outlined narrow almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and nicely detailed bow-shaped lips with an insipid smile, and unadorned elongated pierced earlobes frame her face. Incised on her forehead is a vertical third eye, a 'Urna', or spiritual eye. She is further adorned with lovely jeweled necklaces draped with hanging pendants, and bracelets on all four of her arms.
XXX The female figure has a smooth naturally aged reddish-brown patina lightly covered in mottled variations of green malachite, shows even wear on the entire piece, with weathering consistent with age. This skillfully executed image of a Hindu Devi, is a superb example of the Khmer culture and its dynamic artistry. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation of the divine iconic goddess in human form, with lively imagination and conviction.

Data Observation/Remarks: Bronze composition consisting of early style fabrication, in which part molds were created of the extremities - the legs, multi-arms, and feet attachment to the base, and were later fitted; a normal process for bronze assembly of this type, produced in Cambodia during the later peiods. There are casting flaws, with weld marks, pits, indentations, corrosion, and minor surface abrasions throughout. Never the less, it's an amazing example of Cambodian art, proficiently depicting a sensuous female goddess.
