1929 BIRKS REGENCY PLATE ENGLAND ORNATE TWISTED ARMS THREE LITES CANDELABRA SET

Birks’s firm had begun as a humble gift shop, specializing in retail jewelry, gold, and silver, among other articles. In 1887, Birks opened a jewelry workshop so he could produce his wares in-house. By the next year, in addition to patronizing his local market, his newly minted “artistic department” was acquiring European-made pieces from American suppliers. The reach of the business really exploded in 1896 when the large silverware manufacturer Hendery and Leslie signed an agreement of exclusivity with Birks, ensuring the latter would be the only distributor of non-religious gold and silver pieces in all of Montreal. From 1901 to 1929, Henry Birks and Sons purchased numerous stores both nationally and internationally, opening branches from London to Antwerp and beyond.
