First edition thus, first printing hardcover copy of The Song of Roland translated by Frederic Bliss Luquiens (Macmillan, 1952). Author’s identity is not known but assumed to be named Turod, based on the last line of this classic Medieval French epic narrative poem. An iconic, “chason de geste” or, “song of heroic deeds” based on the Frankish military leader Roland at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in AD 778, during the reign of king Charlemagne. It is the oldest surviving major work of French literature. Likely written between 1040 and 1115 AD. This copy was provided to a reviewer at the time, with original pamphlet and typed letter by the translator.


Price clipped jacket is protected in new archival sleeve but with some scuffing to faces and shelf wear around the edges. Boards are straight and clean but with corners bumped.
