Ce Leica compact mais néanmoins expert propose un capteur 10 Mp 1/1,63″-CCD censé apporter la meilleure qualité d’image possible pour un capteur de cette taille. Leica ne participe pas à la course aux pixels et équipe donc son D-Lux 5 d’un capteur 10 Mp, comme sur les Nikon P7000 et Canon G12. Cette prise de conscience a permis en son temps d' avoir un impact sur toutes les gammes compacts et a fait bénéficier à ces petits boîtiers, d' images de meilleure qualité dans les situations difficiles d’éclairage. Ce Leica D-Lux 5 dispose d’un objectif Leica DC Vario-Summicron 1:2-3,3/5,1-19,2 mm ASPH. à l’ouverture maximale de f/2, les amateurs apprécierons cette grande ouverture en basse lumière.
Le zoom équivalent à un 24-90mm a l’avantage de descendre jusqu’à 24mm, focale appréciée des photographes experts, la position 90mm quant à elle permettant les portraits et plans serrés, une belle gamme de focales donc pour répondre à des besoins variés.
Le bouton en croix sur la partie arrière du D-Lux 5 permet d’effectuer des réglages manuels rapides et simples : distance de mise au point, obturateur, temps d’exposition et corrections d’exposition. Le D-Lux 5 permet au photographe exigeant de piloter l’appareil de façon complètement manuelle, l’automatisme reste disponible pour les prises de vue rapides et spontanées, et pour tous ceux qui ne souhaitent pas sortir des sentiers battus du mode manuel.
Côté disign le D-Lux 5 reprend les standard de la marque et se distingue par un aspect élégant, une sobriété à toute épreuve avec son coloris noir, son unique molette de commande sur le capot supérieur et son légendaire logo Leica rouge. Qu’on le veuille ou non, ça sent la légende même si l’on est très loin de la série M et des légendaires télémétriques argentiques et numériques.
A noter qu'un revêtement imitation cuir grainé à été appliqué, ce qui en fait un modèle unique et facile la prise en main par une meilleure accroche.
Le Leica D-Lux 5 propose un mode vidéo HD 720p. Ce mode vidéo est très accessible puisqu’il suffit de l’enclencher grâce à une touche spéciale disposée sur le capot supérieur du boîtier. Ce mode vidéo propose par contre la modification de l’ouverture de l’objectif et de la mise au point pendant l’enregistrement.
Il est livré dans sa boite d'origine, avec trois batteries, un tube pour support de pare-soleil évidé en harmonie avec le look rétro du revêtement, sa courroie d'origine, un sac de transport et sa notice.

The Leica D-Lux 5 offers 720p HD video mode. This video mode is very accessible since it is enough to engage it thanks to a special key arranged on the top cover of the case.
