Vintage Hawaiian Menehune Metal Advertising Bank by Banthrico MIB

For bid here is a vintage Hawaiian figural metal bank. This plump menehune (Hawaiian elf) is adorned with a feather helmet and cape and a malo (loincloth). Inscribed on his helmet is uuku, the Hawaiian word for tiny. He measures 4" by 3" at his base and is 5 3/4" tall. The bank was a promotional gift item from State Savings & Loan in Honolulu, Hawaii and was manufactured by Banthrico probably in the 1950's. (Note that there is no zip code on the box.) It  comes with its original cardboard box and tissue paper. It was removed from the box for the first time to take these photos. There is no key because these items were given out by local savings banks without keys so that the young savers would return with their banks full of coins to be opened counted and hopefully deposited. The trap may be opened by a T-4 or by a number of other Banthrico keys but we offer no guarantee of this. Printed on the top of the box is: REPLICA M-9221 MADE IN U.S.A. BY BANTHRICO INTERNATIONAL CHICAGO (6), ILL. THRIFT DEVICES SINCE 1914.

Thanks for looking. Please send along any questions before you bid. Please note that we ship only to the US so please bid only if you have a US shipping address. Item will be sent by USPS priority mail. We expect payment within 24 hours. When you are in Honolulu please visit our shop Antique Alley in the heart of Kaka’ako.
