The Big Show

The Big Show is a 1936 American Western musical film directed by Mack V. Wright and starring Gene Autry, Kay Hughes, and Smiley Burnette. Written by Dorrell and Stuart E. McGowan, the film is about a singing cowboy who confuses two girls by being himself and his own stunt double at the Texas Centennial in Dallas. Roy Rogers appears in the film as one of the Sons of the Pioneers

Rancher Gene (Gene Autry) and his buddy Frog (Smiley Burnette) go after a pair of cattle-rustling outlaws, the Apache Kid (Max Hoffman Jr.) and Black Jim (Charles King). Gene and Frog are hot on the trail of the outlaws' boss, Joe Stafford (Monte Blue), when Stafford's niece, Rosa Montero (Armida), and his stepdaughter, Mary (Ann Pendleton), mistake them for the wanted men. Gene's pal Buffalo Bradey (Hal Taliaferro) and cowboy singers Al Clauser and his Oklahoma Outlaws help save the day.

During a dice game, the lights go out and a participant is shot to death. Larry Evans (Russell Arms), one of the players, is accused of the shooting, so Gene Autry (Gene Autry), a friend of the dead man, confronts Larry and his sister, Mary (Barbara Britton), who are hiding out in an old house. But Gene quickly realizes Larry is innocent and decides to protect the siblings from the law while he looks for the real killer. Gene's pursuit is sidetracked when an angry mob comes after Mary and Larry.

Having taken over a ranch from incompetent ex-manager Hap (William Haade), Gene Autry (Gene Autry) and pal Frog (Smiley Burnette) get ready for some visitors. Teacher Alice Bennett (Fay McKenzie) and student Connie Lane (Edith Fellows) drop by. But when Connie tries to ditch Alice, it's Gene who finds her. With Gene and Hap about to face off in a rodeo, Connie takes sneaky measures to ensure Gene's victory. But, with her father due at the ranch, her impish ways just might catch up with her.
