Dessain, MCMXXXIV ( 1934), printed in Belgium.

It is a large high altar missal: 13 ½ by 10 ¼ by 3” thick, in red leather over heavy board fine binding with gilt embossed depiction of the Crucifixion both front and back covers, ribbed spine face with gilded title, red leather thumb tabs extending on the right side of the richly gilded page block;

There is a system of six multi-colored silk marker ribbons with fleur-de-lis and Crown of Thorns pattern attached by cord to the page block on the top, each ribbon 1” wide, end paper decoration in green and gold cross pattern inside front and back covers, one full page illustration of the Crucifixion at the Canon of the Mass section, and numerous matching black & white part page illustrations and chapter headers and end flourishes, completely in Latin, with many pages with square note Gregorian chant notation.

This altar missal was donated from a Canadian church to a religious community in my area, proceeds from the sale to go towards their Catholic Charities; note that there is a hand written inscription in pen opposite title page, indicating that the volume was donated by a person in memory of her mother, dated Oct.29, 1939, Feast of Christ the King ( see photo #7).

The missal has been well used but quite gently, interior text is fresh, clean and unmarked, a little wear noted at the most used Ordinary of the Mass section, external covers show a bit of generalized surface wear. Note that the bottom edges of the cover boards are slightly scuffed where the book was probably bound with others sometime in its history, (see photo #14 for a close-up of this); the tips only of the silk marker ribbons are a bit tattered. Over-all condition is noted and reflected in the pricing for this beautiful vintage altar missal.
