About the Grizzly Bear issue and the Canadian Wildlife series

Our popular Canadian Wildlife series includes a grizzly bear ($8, 1997), a loon ($1, 1998), a polar bear ($2, 1998), a moose ($5, 2003), a white-tailed deer ($1, 2005), an Atlantic walrus ($1, 2005), a Peregrine falcon ($2, 2005) and a Sable Island horse ($2, 2005). The Grizzly Bear issue was created using intaglio, the same technique used to create Canada's first postage stamp in 1851. The intaglio plates were created by master engraver Jorge Peral, who also engraved paper currency in Canada and several other countries. Like the other stamps in the high-value series, the stamp incorporates hidden security features.

About the grizzly bear

Weighing close to 400 kg, the grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) has been named "the monarch of the wilderness." Measuring 2.74 m, this majestic mammal is an omnivore, eating mostly plants. During peak feeding periods, the grizzly can consume as many as 200,000 berries a day!

About the design

The grizzly bear on this stamp is rendered in striking detail under a subdued blue sky. Its fur swirls with countless fine lines, creating a tactile sense of depth and volume. Its expression is pensive and deliberate, with keen eyes surveying the surroundings. Each muscle and contour of the bear is artfully delineated, emphasizing the creature's powerful physique. Under its massive paws are pale green blades of grass. This stamp is particularly attractive because of its unique elements. Reflecting the value of the stamp, the number 8 has been incorporated into the bear's rear right limb.
