Das Verbreitungsgebiet der Art umfasst große Teile Europas, Asiens und Afrikas, außerdem Australien und Neuseeland sowie Grönland und die Ostküste Nordamerikas. Die Nahrung besteht wie bei allen Vertretern der Gattung Phalacrocorax fast ausschließlich aus Fisch.
