The antique "THE
CHAPIN" FOLDING COMBINATION RULE (full bound boxwood & brass,
with inclinometer, level, bevel, square & 12" rule) No. 036
by "STEPHENS CO." from circa the mid -to- late 19th
century (as per the January 12, 1858 patent date),
It is 1 foot long when
folded out. It folds out once and it is 6 inches long when folded. It has a
level on one side and the bubble is good and it has a metal piece that folds
out of one end so it can be used as a square. It is in good condition. There is
some light staining on the fold out metal part.
Nice brass edges
and a working bubble level. Measures 6 3/8" long in closed position. 3/8”
thick. Bevel is 4-1/2” in length. Makers mark is “No. 036 THE C-S CO. Pine
meadow, Conn. USA”
Chapin-Stephens was
formed with the merger of H. Chapin's Son & co. and L.C. Stephens & Co.
in 1901, in Pine Meadow, CT. They operated until 1929
This ruler is in good
condition with great patina. It folds out easily & the pin to close is in
place it works great.
