Created in Japan during the late 19th century (the late Meiji period), this exquisite hand painted Imari porcelain charger features a delicate blue and white décor divided into four distinct sections: lucious foliage, blooming trees, large leaves and a traditional house with mountains in the background, occupy the composition beautifully.

Bordered by a scalloped edge, blue colour alternates with darker touches, thus creating a lively sense of depth.

Imari is a style of porcelain named after the Japanese port from which it was shipped from, beginning in the late 17th century.

There are no marks on the back of this charger. Imari is most commonly unmarked. Makers and artists names occur along with generic details on some items. As the Imari name was a Western construct it is not found (or exceptionally rarely found) on genuine items from the period. Also found as marks are naturalistic devices such as a leaves and Buddhist symbols.

The charger measures 16.25 inches (41cms) diameter
