A wonderful, sentimental Victorian mourning locket brooch, with obituary dating it to 1852.

The engraving to the back of the brooch reads: In Memory Of John Meeson; Obt. 22nd Sept 1852.

Oval in shape with a gold cased back (layer of 9ct gold applied to base metal) and black enamel front.

Gold swirls adorn the black enamel front, surrounding a central raised locket compartment, containing a Prince of Wales human hair curl (from the deceased), with original glass cover. Sadly the glass has an old crack across it (see photos) but thankfully is stable.

The back has the typical tube hinge, pin and 'c' catch to fasten.

Measurements: 43mm by 37mm.

Weight: 22gms.

In good overall antique condition; providing the piece is handled with care (ideally displayed rather than worn) the glass should be fine, as it is stable, despite the old crack to it. This is a stunning heritage piece that deserves to be preserved for future generations.
