Four Vintage Circa 1970s MCM Chrome & Textured Grey Upholstered Lucite Italian Manufactured Folding Chairs.

These chairs appear and are manufactured similarly to the famous Giancarlo Piretti Plia Chairs, however they lack the chunky chrome circular swivel hinges. Consequently, I am unsure of the specific designer, as the only visible markings I noticed were the ones listed on the paper attachments below the seat.

Each chair measures approximately 18” wide in total, 17” tall at the seat, 29 1/4“ tall in total (top of backrest) and has a 16“ square seat. The chairs have a nice high quality feel, each weighing around seven and a half pounds.

All four chairs appear to have been exceptionally well cared for and as a result remain in excellent vintage condition with no cracks, dents, pitting, damage or issues. The chrome frames are still nice and shiny with no rust or pitting. The lucite or acrylic components remain securely attached and firmly positioned in place with no gaps, cracks, fractures, crazing or issues. The grey textured upholstery (detailed image #4) which consists of urethane foam is in great shape with no rips or tears.

All four chairs function properly, opening and closing smoothly and maintaining their structural integrity when placed in the seating position.

The chairs each have four black “feet” which are wrapped around the very bottom chrome section, so as to prevent the chrome from coming in direct contact with the floor. These pieces also seemingly make it easier for the chairs to sit flush with the ground (these appear identical to the ones on the Plia Chairs). All four of these chairs sat flush with the floor and exhibited no wobbling or weaknesses under normal use.

The chairs have obviously been used on occasion throughout the years and do show minor signs of light use, they are not perfect or brand new. More specifically, there are three small, light brown stains visible on two of the four seats. The largest stain, which is the largest by far, was photographed at close range and in high definition detail and can be seen in image #18. Importantly, since I was unfamiliar with the grey upholstery material, I have made absolutely no attempt to clean or even wipe away these small marks, as it seemed a decision left best to the end user.

All said these vintage folding chairs have been very well preserved and remain in fantastic, completely saw functional shape.

The chairs retain their original attached paperwork which is positioned under the seat and indicates the material information as well as the country of manufacture.

Please be aware that In addition to the overall design, materials and the aforementioned black pieces which serve as feet, I also noticed that when viewed from the underside, the shape of the lucite seat is almost identical to the Giancarlo Piretti Plia Chair with the circular center.

In conclusion and in consideration of all of the evidence presented, I do believe that there is a high likelihood that these chairs were also manufactured by Castelli. However, I am by no means an expert on Castelli furniture products and therefore unable to guarantee the manufacturer.
