Central to accounts of Norse mythology are the plights of the gods, goddesses, and their interaction with various other beings, such as with the jötnar, who may be friends, lovers, foes and/or family members of the gods.
The first coin in this sought after Perth Mint’s "Norse Goddesses" series features Freya, the goddess of love, sex, beauty, fertility, gold, seiðr, war, and death. Freya was also considered a symbol of sensuality and of the wile and untamed forces of nature. She is the owner of the necklace Brísingamen, rides a chariot pulled by two cats, keeps the boar Hildisvíni by her side, possesses a cloak of falcon feathers (Valshamr), and, by her husband Óðr, is the mother of two daughters, Hnoss and Gersemi. Along with her brother Freyr (Old Norse the “Lord”), her father Njörðr, and her mother (Njörðr’s sister, unnamed in sources), she is a member of the Vanir.
Freya rules over her heavenly afterlife field Fólkvangr and there receives half of those that die in battle, whereas the other half go to the god Odin’s Hall, Valhalla. Within Fólkvangr is her hall, Sessrúmnir. Freya assists other deities by allowing them to use her feathered cloak, is invoked in matters of fertility and love, and is frequently sought after by powerful jötnar who wish to make her their wife. Freya’s husband, the god Óðr, is frequently absent. She cries tears of red gold for him, and searches for him under assumed names.
Reverse: depicts Freya with her sword in her left hand and wearing her magical feathered cloak. Also featured in the design is a cat perched on her right shoulder, her golden bristled boar Hildisvini, a shield, and a battlefield in the background. The inscription FREYA and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark also feature in the design.
Obverse: Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, the coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2017 year-date, and the monetary denomination.
Packaging: The coin is housed in a prestigious square wooden display case, plush inside (the coin isn’t encapsulated), and with stunning engraved detail on its lid. The coin is accompanied by a low numbered Certificate of Authenticity (#202) and packaged in a themed shipper.
