The history of the Bure watch company began in 1815 in St. Petersburg, where Karl Bure moved from Revel with his son.
Pavel Karlovich grew up with his father's watch business and eventually became an assistant and continuer of his business. In the Reference Book about merchants in 1865, Pavel Karlovich Bure is mentioned as "a Revel guild, 55 years old, in merchants since 1839". At the request of the Dukes of Leuchtenberg, their Imperial Highnesses, Princes Eugene and Sergei Maximilianovich, in 1876, Pavel Karlovich Bure was awarded the title of hereditary honorary citizen “for conscientious and diligent, with the preservation of state interest, the fulfillment since 1839 of the obligations assumed by the Court in Bozya Nicholas resting daughter of Emperor Nicholas I) and Sergievskaya dacha ”. His title and business was inherited by his eldest son Pavel Pavlovich Bure, who graduated from the Petropavlovsk Commercial School and became his father's companion at the age of 26 in 1868. In 1874 he acquired a large watch factory in the heart of the Swiss watch industry in the town of Locle. In 1880 he was an appraiser in the Cabinet of His Imperial Majesty. This title gave the right to the state emblem in the window. He is also a technician at the Imperial Hermitage and consul of the Republic of Venezuela, supplier to the Imperial Court from 1879 and a merchant of the 1st guild from 1884. In the last thirty years before the revolution, the company has become that "Pavel Bure", without which it is impossible to talk about the history of Russian watchmaking. To expand the business, a store was opened in Moscow, and then in Kiev. In 1899 the firm was awarded the title of Supplier to the Imperial Court.
During the reign of Alexander III (1881-1894) 3477 gift hours were presented from the Cabinet of His Majesty in the amount of 277,472 rubles. The overwhelming majority of them were from the Bure company. At the end of the 1890s, only the Imperial Court supplied watches for the amount of 50-60 thousand rubles a year. In total, out of 15 thousand watches purchased through His Majesty's Office in the 30 pre-revolutionary years, more than 80 percent were "from Bure". In the papers of His Majesty's Cabinet there are petitions from the Bure company for permission to import into Russia a watch with the state emblem on the lid. In the bureaucratic and artistic environment, they were just as attentive to the price of gifts for the Bure as they once were to the rank according to the Peter's Table of Ranks. Fyodor Chaliapin refused to accept the gold "Pavel Bure" presented to him for participating in a concert for the imperial family during the celebration of the 290th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty in 1903. The reason, as the officials of His Majesty's Cabinet pointed out, is that the singer had the same watch for 150 rubles, which he received at last year's concert. After the incident, the watch was sent "up in price" and the gold case was adorned with rubies and diamonds. The cost rose to 450 rubles, and Fyodor Ivanovich accepted them. This is how archival documents interpret this episode. In his later memoirs, Fyodor Ivanovich presented his refusal from the tsarist gift as a fight against the rotten tsarist regime, and does not mention receiving a more expensive option. The singer's expression is known: "Only birds sing for free." Now this Chaliapin clock is in the museums of the Moscow Kremlin, where it was transferred by the descendants of the singer. Watches in simple metal cases were also made by government orders. We are talking about prize army watches, railway watches and, of course, the world's first real wrist watches. This watch was ordered by the Main Artillery Directorate in 1904 in connection with the Russian-Japanese war. There were so many hours for Pavel Bure that it is difficult to find a plot from Russian life at the beginning of the last century, where the matter would have done without them. Walkers and chronographs, road guides and wall clocks from the presence, alarm clocks and gold repeaters - the whole story is literally permeated with references to "Pavel Bure".
Not without the participation of writers, this name has almost become a household name. For example, in the works of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov alone, the "Bure clock" is found more than 20 times. It remains only to be very surprised why a bold writing pen, like Pushkin's, was not found, so that it was customary for the "storm" to be written with a lowercase letter, like "breget". Connoisseurs of antique watches find it difficult to explain why Bure watches were anything better than watches from other watch companies operating in Russia at the turn of the century. Some of them, like Bure, had their own factories in Russia, where watches were assembled from parts brought from abroad. However, neither Winter, nor Omega, nor even Moser could compete with the Bure firm. The reasons should be sought in proper marketing, focus on high status, counting on the broadest layers of buyers, and not only in the support of the Court and government orders. At the time when watches from luxury turned into a necessity, "Pavel Bure" sold watches for everyone. The Pavel Bure brand was also worn by medium-size pocket watches in a simple metal case (of those that were assembled at the firm's own factories). Prices for Pavel Bure watches started at just two rubles. The firm owned 50 percent of the Russian market for inexpensive watches. For wealthier buyers, the same movements were inserted into silver and gold cases. Complex (repeaters, chronographs, calendars) movements were ordered from the most reputable Swiss watch companies. And in 1916, "Pavel Bure" received a Swiss patent No. 74144 for a chronograph mechanism of its own design. The Pavel Bure watch received the highest awards at many national and international exhibitions, including at the World Exhibitions in Paris: in 1889 - a silver medal, and in 1900 - a gold medal.

The revolution of 1917 put an end to the affairs of the company "Pavel Bure" in Russia. This cost the company 7 million gold rubles in damages and 10 buildings. It is symbolic that the watch “Pavel Bure” - gold (No. 88964, which served the emperor for nearly fifteen years) and silver naval watches - were with Nicholas II until his death in Yekaterinburg. The Bure watch was also to the liking of the new government. Nikolai Podvoisky, chairman of the Petrograd Military Revolutionary Committee, led the October coup in gold pocket "Pavel Bure", which was later called the Watch of the Revolution. In the office of Vladimir Lenin in the Kremlin, round wall "Bure" hung on the wall. For many years, Joseph Stalin and Nikita Khrushchev controlled the passage of time on pocket "Pavel Bure". It should be noted that the company Pavel Bure did not end its existence in 1917. She was saved by the fact that the main production facilities were located in Switzerland. And with the transfer of the headquarters from Petrograd to Le Locle, Switzerland, normal work was resumed. Although the first years were very difficult, as the main sales market, the Russian one, was lost. But the company was able not only to survive, but also to significantly expand the geography of supplies and become one of the leading watch companies in Switzerland. To make Pavel Buhre watches recognizable by consumers all over the world, the logo was changed from Cyrillic to Latin Paul Buhre. The watch has been awarded more than 500 prizes from Swiss observatories for precision and has been successfully sold all over the world. For many years in the middle of the last century, they were supplied to the English court. The brand returned to Russia in 2004. And already the next year, in the year of the 190th anniversary of the company, the first new items were released under the revived brand, which convey the classic spirit of the company's ancient masterpieces. Particular attention is paid to the high reliability and quality inherent in the pre-revolutionary "Bure". Only the best Swiss mechanics, tested by time, are installed in the watch. Starting with the release of inexpensive models in steel cases, in just a few years the company has included in its range products in noble silver, gold and platinum with complex and unique calibers. And the interest with which the novelties "from Bure" are met by people of different generations in many countries of the world instills confidence in the revival of another ancient tradition - to determine the time according to "Pavel Bure".
