Hand-printed in color in Japan on Japanese crepe (hosho) paper.
Bound as a string-bound block-book in color illustrated crepe paper wrappers, silk finishing over spine.
Octavo (19 x 15.5 cm.), (8), 80, (4) pages on Japanese double-folded crepe paper leaves, illustrated throughout with colored woodcuts.
In the original color illustrated chitsu case, (cardboard box, open at the top and bottom), covered with a color woodblock print of two white aster flowers in a basket. The two ivory-like pins are missing.
Almost every page is illustrated and many of the illustrations are full page.
The book contains many lovely color woodblock illustrations by celebrated artists & book illustrators of the time: Yunosuke Mishima a.k.a. Shoso and Shujiro Arai a.k.a. Yoshimune.

A superb example of Japanese book arts containing charming and delicate color illustrations, utilizing subtle vegetal-based pigments, and designed to appeal to children as well as adults.


Karl Adolf Florenz (* 10. January 1865 in Erfurt; † 9. February 1939 in Hamburg) was a pioneer of German Japaneseology. He became known above all for his work on Japanese literary history (1903–1906) as well as for his translations of half of the Kojiki from the Nihongi (Japanese Annals, 1892–1897) and the entire Kogo shūi (Japanese Mythology, 1901, and The Historical Sources of the Shinto Religion, 1919).


CONDITION: Book: Near Fine. (Wrappers have some creasing at edges; else, Fine.)
Case: Good. (Closing pins are missing. Surface tears on spine, wear at tear at spine folds, light soil and rubbing.)
