"Homer; by Alfred J. Flauder.  [Model of figure of blind poet seated in Greek chair with scroll in lap.]  Feb. 11, 1922."  So reads an extract from the Catalogue of Copyright Entries, Works of Art, as maintained by the Library of Congress.

The copyright is held by Weidlich Bros. Manufacturing Co.  Weidlich Bros. was established in 1905 in Bridgeport, CT, initially making gold and silver plated wares, but expanding into decorative items for the home by the 1920s and '30s.  Flauder was the company's head artisan and I find numerous designs of his having been copyrighted by Weidlich Bros. in the those decades.  He seems to have done a lot sports-related plaques.

Hollow-cast in grey metal (spelter) with a bronze-colored finish applied.  Weidlich's customary logo is on the back of the base along with their stock number 646.  Circa 1922.

Condition is near mint.  No breaks in the metal, hardly any nicks or dings.  Finish is almost unblemished and beautiful.  Original tin plates covering the bottoms (don't know if the felts are original).  Both pieces sit flat and stable.

5 3/4 inches tall; base is 4 1/4 inches X 3 1/4 inches.  Combined weight is 4 1/4 pounds.

Perfect gift for the classical scholar or struggling English major in your family.
