DESCRIPTION:   Scarce early printing of the 24c Washington stamp tied to cover by red grid cancel; also has red NEW YORK credit datestamp on the front and October 7, 1861 Ashford receiver on back. Note that although the two page letter is dated September 8, 1861, the letter looks to have been posted later that month (as the credit datestamp looks to show a September 25th date)  This cover is therefore an early usage of either US# 70c or US# 70d, i.e., the rare violet or pale grey violet shades of this design . Though the cover shows some wear and has faults, still a very rare find and is especially desirable with original content !!  View scan(s) for additional details.
