This is a nice example of an old (almost antique, but not
yet quite 100 years old) flower weight.
These old Flower weights are generally recognized as having been made in
the 1920s-1930s, however some examples have been dated to about the 1960s/70s
when U.S. trade with China resumed. The
story goes that some US antique dealers took several antique paperweights over
to China in the 1920s and asked them to make "copies". Chinese "copies" of the classic
Baccarat Double Clematis and Pansy, and the New England Glass Company Nosegay,
Millefiori, and Blue Flower weights are well documented as is a rare version of
a Clichy flower. Other designs were also
produced including some upright flowers.
This is the Chinese version of the New England Glass Company Quatrefoil Faceted
Blue Clematis
A Blue flower is set with a bud, stem, and two Green
leaves. The center of the flower is a White millefiori cane. The design rests on a White spiral latticinio
ground. The weight has the
characteristic "Quatrefoil" top facet (a type of facet that was
specific to the New England Glass Company) and eight side facets (four large
and four small).
This paperweight is 2-1/2" in diameter and 1-5/8"
high. There are a few small nicks to the
edges of some of the facets and an open bubble on the bottom (from the making). Other than that the weight is clean and
condition is near perfect. Although not
signed, attribution is positive.
