Two volumes bound into one, published over a span of two years between 1773 and 1774, here finely contemporaneously bound in full marbled calf with rather nice gilt borders to the boards.
Pindar was an Ancient Greek lyric poet from Thebes, being one of the nine canonical lyric poets. His odes provide great insight into the religious beliefs of early classical Greece, and were written to extol the virtues of the victorious athletes at the Panhellenic festival games at Olympia, Delphi, Corinth, and Nemea.
King George III of England had a copy of this same edition, now held at the Royal Collection RCIN 1058016.

Contemporary fine binding, full calf, with spine and board edges finely tooled in gilt. Spine sunned, lacking original tooled label, but with the imprint of what was there. Binding rubbed, minor loss to backstrip at extremities exposing sewn head and tail pieces. Joints rubbed, front beginning to crack, but with both boards securely attached, the binding secure, and without shelf lean. Shelf and edge wear. All edges gilt, very good. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown with a written shelf reference to the bookplate, else without ink ownership inscriptions etc. Text block mildly toned throughout with the odd spot of foxing, but generally very clean, internally very good to near fine. A lovely copy.
